Music Director - Fred Hughes Fred’s 50-year career as a musician that began at age 12 in The New Holland Band. His father, Fred Sr., played tuba in the band and young Fred accompanied his father to rehearsals and performances from his earliest recollections. Before he could perform in The New Holland Band, he pulled the bass drum on parades and the annual Memorial Day Pilgrimage. He began studying keyboards and low brass at the age of 8 and by age

12 was performing alongside his father in the New Holland and Bainbridge Bands on tuba and in his dad’s jazz group on organ. Fred has performed in all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Korea, and Europe. He was a member of the First Army and Eighth Army Bands as a tuba player, and pianist for the Army’s premier touring jazz ensemble - - the Jazz Ambassadors. A sampling of the jazz festivals at which he has performed include the Newport, Montreux, Nice and North Sea Jazz Festivals. He has conducted symphony orchestras to include the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Cincinnati Pops and Chicago Lyric Opera Orchestras. He can be heard on over 30 recordings and his book, The Jazz Pianist: Left Hand Voicings and Chord Theory was originally published by Warner Brothers Publications and is now available from Alfred Publications. Fortunate to have many great teachers and mentors in his life, Fred’s experiences as a young apprentice in the community and professional organizations of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania provided the opportunity and training that have shaped him into the musician he is today.

Leon Hillard - Assistant Music Director Leon Hillard is the Assistant Director and Swing Band director for The New Holland Band. He is a graduate of Elizabethtown College and West Chester University in Music Education who retired from public school teaching as an instrumental music instructor in 2011. He is currently an adjunct trumpet professor at Elizabethtown College, plays with the Dave Stahl Sacred Orchestra, and continues to teach privately in the Gap and New Holland area.

He was an associate instructor for the All-American Youth Honors Band during the 1980's with performances throughout Europe, Mexico and Hawaii. He has performed in many show bands through the last four decades, performing songs from the 1960's to present day music.
